Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park, Clearly

Two Countries, One Species

Mountain gorillas live on both sides of the Virunga massif and in Bwindi’s forest in Uganda. Rwanda’s treks start from Volcanoes National Park, above Musanze. The country is compact. The park headquarters is organised. The permit is expensive for a reason: groups are small, trails are managed, and the hour with the family is tightly kept.

Uganda’s Bwindi treks can be longer walks through denser forest. Rwanda’s volcano slopes can be steep and muddy too. Neither is a zoo. Both require a permit booked in advance through the official system — we handle that as part of a confirmed itinerary, not as a surprise add-on.

The Shape of the Day

You leave the lodge in the dark. Briefing at the park. Porters are available and worth hiring; it is respectful work and it saves your knees. You walk until the trackers radio the family’s position. You then have one hour. Masks or distance rules follow current park guidance — we brief you on the version that applies to your date.

After the trek, many travellers visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund or Iby’Iwacu cultural village because the afternoon should not be an empty hotel room. We only add those stops when you want them.

Combining Rwanda and Uganda

An 8-day or 10-day circuit can put Volcanoes on one end and Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth on the other, crossing at Cyanika or Katuna with the right paperwork. That is a real Kitum itinerary, not a brochure fantasy. It needs passport validity, yellow-fever certificates where required, and enough nights so the border is not the whole day.

What We Will Not Oversell

  • You will not “play with” gorillas
  • Infants below the park age limit cannot trek
  • Fitness matters more than fashion boots
  • Permits are non-trivial money; cancellation follows park and our terms

If you want Rwanda only — Kigali, Volcanoes, and home — we run that as a short gorilla safari. If you want both forests, say so early so permits are not left to chance.
