What to Pack for an East Africa Safari (And What to Leave at Home)

Clothes That Disappear into the Landscape

Bright white shows dust. Camouflage can be restricted in some contexts and looks like costume. Pack earth colours: khaki, olive, brown, dull blue. Long sleeves for sun and tsetse in some woodlands. A fleece for 5 a.m. game drives. One nicer shirt for a lodge dinner if you care — many travellers do not.

Rain is not only a “wet season” problem in Bwindi. A compact jacket or poncho earns its weight.

Footwear

Broken-in hiking shoes for gorilla and chimpanzee days. Closed shoes for boats and dusty vehicles. Sandals for camp showers and Zanzibar. New boots on day one of a trek is how blisters become the memory.

The Small Things People Forget

• Headlamp for tents and early starts
• Binoculars you will actually lift (8x or 10x)
• Spare camera battery — cold mornings drain them
• Prescriptions in original packaging
• Yellow fever card if your route requires it
• Photocopies of passport, stored separately
• Reusable bottle; we refill where water is safe or treated

What Not to Bring

Drones without park permits. Plastic mountains of shopping bags. Valuables you cannot watch. Expectations of laundry as a daily hotel service on a bush night — ask us what each lodge actually offers.

Bags

Soft duffels pack better in safari vehicles than hard suitcases. Weight limits on bush flights are real when a Tanzania itinerary uses them. We will tell you the kilogram number for your route.
